Custom Glass Mirrors: Planning for a Bathroom Remodel

Modern bathroom design custom build

The Springfield Glass Company offers many options for custom glass in your home, including mirrors. A unique mirror reflects a homeowner’s style and personality. It also opens up the room, making it feel more spacious. Mirrors are essential for the bathroom, and custom mirrors can be a significant part of a bathroom remodel. Today on the blog, the Springfield Glass Company shares some tips for planning a bathroom remodel, and why you should invest in a custom mirror.

Custom Mirror: Make Your Bathroom Shine

A unique mirror can increase the appeal of your bedroom, living room, entryway, or dining room, but it is a must-have decor for the bathroom. Bathroom mirrors serve many different purposes, from brushing teeth to checking hair to putting on makeup. But don’t settle for a regular, boring mirror. Make your bathroom shine with a unique custom glass mirror, which can be the finishing touch to your bathroom remodel. Whether you want a classic, trendy, or elegant mirror, you can get a custom design of any shape or size.

Custom Mirror: Match the Theme of Your Bathroom

While there is a lot to consider, planning a bathroom remodel is exciting. How much you want to change is entirely up to you, as long as the changes match the layout. For example, if your bathroom has two sinks, you can choose a rectangular mirror to fit the space or opt for two oval-shaped mirrors (one above each sink). You can get super creative by matching the mirror frame to the color of the faucet handles and soap dispensers. Also, consider the wallpaper and color scheme, and whether or not a custom mirror frame is best for your bathroom design.

Custom Mirror: Build Your Self-Esteem

Perhaps you want to switch from a shower curtain to a glass shower door. Maybe you’re looking to repaint the walls, re-do the tile flooring, or install new lights. Whatever your remodeling ideas are, don’t neglect the importance of a mirror. When you choose a mirror that is a perfect fit for you, every glance in the mirror builds your self-esteem. Appreciate the way you look, decorate your bathroom, and build self-confidence with a new custom glass mirror from the Springfield Glass Company.

Is Clear Glass Actually Clear?

Ultra clear glass in modern office building

Is clear glass actually clear? The simple answer is yes, everyday clear glass is actually clear, but there’s more to the story. Did you know that there are products that are even more clear than clear glass for use when the situation calls for it? Today, Springfield Glass Company discusses glass clarity and how different factors can impact your custom glass.

Iron Content and How it Impacts Clarity

All normal clear glass has a light green hue to it, caused by the iron content in the glass. If you hold white paper behind any non-tinted glass in your home or car, you’ll notice that the paper will have a greenish tone to it. The thicker the glass, the more noticeable the effect. You’ll be able to see this in your glass cookware as well. The greenish color is most noticeable when looking at the edge of a piece of cut glass or mirror in your home. Normal clear glass will have a very dark green edge. This is especially true of heavy glass like thick frameless shower doors.

Often, the green hue is pleasing to the eye and imparts a sense of durability and quality by accentuating the thickness of the glass. Sometimes, though, you need additional clarity to avoid a color shift of the item you want to look at behind the custom glass.

Ultra-Clear Glass

For those cases, low-iron, ultra-clear glass is available. This glass is truly ultra-clear. It is difficult to perceive the thickness of it, and the cut edges do not have the normal dark green look. The edges are so clear, they can look blue-ish like the sky or like clear water over a white-sand ocean floor. The glass itself can disappear and become invisible. The most common uses for this glass are in displaying items where the perceived color of the displayed item is particularly important. Also, when back-painting or applying logos or graphics to the back of the glass, ultra-clear glass can be very useful to keep the applied colors true.

Low-iron glass be purchased in the same variety of thicknesses as normal clear glass, and it can be cut, polished, and fabricated in all the same ways.

Custom Glass: Choosing a Display Case for Collectibles – SGC

Collectibles are meant to be on display! Whatever your passion is, if you’ve spent years procuring a collection, you want to make sure that you invest in a custom glass display case to show off your collection. Or, perhaps you own a business and need display cases for your merchandise. Whatever the situation, you want to make sure that you select a perfectly-crafted display case.

Personal Collection

Many people have personal collections of valuable memorabilia or collectibles that they have spent a lot of time and money procuring. These kinds of collections should be put on display for both you and others to enjoy. One way to do this is to invest in a custom glass display case. This can be a wall-mounted display case or a bookcase-like display with shelves. In both cases, you’ll be able to enjoy the collection while keeping it protected from fingerprints, dust, and damage.

In a business, your display cases are often part of your decor. It’s an opportunity to put your products on display for customers to instantly see and admire when they walk into your store. For different businesses, you’ll want to consider different options. For instance, if you own and operate a jewelry store, you may opt for pedestal cases to display your more impressive pieces. If you own a clothing boutique, you may choose a wall display case or towers in order to highlight your inventory.

Why a Glass Display Case?

Glass display cases allow for maximum visibility. With a full custom glass display case, your valuable items will be on display from all angles. A glass case also provides a sleek and modern look for your space, while remaining easy to clean. When it comes to custom glass projects like this, the only limit is your imagination. Springfield Glass Company: Glass Edge Types

Beveled Glass Edge Table Top

So, you need a piece of glass for your home or business? Great, we’re here to help! Springfield Glass Company has exceptional options for custom-designed glass. One of the elements you’ll be able to pick for your glass is the type of edge you want to meet your design vision. If the edge of your piece will be seen, edge treatment will have a great effect on the feel, appearance, and usability of your glass. Read on in today’s blog from Springfield Glass Company to learn about the glass edge types you can choose from!

Common Glass Edge Options

Cut Edge

This will be a scored and snapped edge. It will be sharp and difficult to handle safely. It may have chips and rough edges. We don’t recommend this edge for direct use by our customers.

Shop Seamed Edge (for plate glass)

This is where we sand the cut edge to create a slight chamfer on the top and bottom edges of the piece to make it smooth and safer to handle. This edge will have a nice appearance and will not have chips or rough edges. This is the most common edge treatment for non-tempered glass.

Plant Seamed Edge (for tempered glass)

This will be similar to the shop seamed edge, but it will be done by a machine in a fabrication plant. This edge will be safer to handle than a cut edge but may not be suitable for exposed viewing the way a shop seamed edge is. The primary purpose for this edge is to prepare the glass for tempering, not to improve appearance.

Flat Polished Edge

This is an edge with a nice, uniform, shiny appearance. It will be smooth and safe to handle. The top and bottom edges of the piece will be chamfered to remove sharpness, resulting in a three-sided edge that has all surfaces polished to a shine. It is decorative and pleasing to feel and look at. This is the most common edge treatment for tempered glass products that will have exposed edges.

Pencil Polished Edge

This treatment is similar to the flat polished edge except that its overall shape will be like the round edge of a pencil split lengthwise. This is the smoothest edge and has a very nice appearance.

Beveled Edge

This process grinds away and polishes a part of the face of the glass to provide a beveled surface along the top where it transitions to the edge. The beveled edge is very decorative and is most noticeable from the face of the glass, whereas the other treatments are only visible from the edge. The width of the bevel can be selected to match the desired effect and the thickness of the glass; typically, from one-half inch to one and one-half inches. Beveled edges are most commonly used on tabletops and mirrors.

Springfield Glass Company: Table Top Glass

Table Top Glass from Springfield Glass Company

Glass Table Top Dining Area

Springfield Glass Company sells and installs table top glass for residential and commercial use. In today’s blog, we will discuss a few things to consider that will affect your selection when picking custom glass for a tabletop.

Table Top Glass – Strength and Thickness

The most important consideration for tabletop glass is how strong the glass needs to be. If the glass will be used just to cover and protect a desk or tabletop, and it’s fully supported by the furniture itself, the strength of the glass is not as important. If the glass itself is the top, the strength of the glass is very important. Two main factors determine the strength of glass: glass thickness and glass type.
Typical thicknesses for glass tops are a one-quarter inch or one-half inch. There are numerous other thicknesses available, but these are the most common. Generally, if the glass is just covering the top, one-quarter inch is a good thickness to use. If the glass itself is the top, we will often recommend half-inch thickness for added strength.

Table Top Glass – Safety Factors

Typical glass types for tabletops are regular plate glass or tempered safety glass. Strength requirements are one reason to pick one over the other. Safety requirements are another critical factor for this decision. Regular plate glass, also known as annealed glass, is what normal windows, mirrors, and picture frames are made of. It breaks relatively easily if subjected to a bending load. It can break into large, sharp, dangerous pieces. Tempered glass has four times the strength of plate glass relative to bending load resistance. Tempered glass is also known as safety glass and breaks into small, less dangerous pellets, as opposed to the large shards.

Table Top Glass – Choosing the Right Product

If a glass top is fully supported and does not require as much bending strength, quarter-inch plate glass is fine to use. However, if the same top might be dislodged or broken by playing children, quarter-inch safety glass would be a better choice in order to minimize the possibility of broken glass injuries. If the top is unsupported, we will typically recommend tempered glass both for strength and safety. In that case, the determination for thickness will be based on overall size.

Other things to consider when selecting glass for your tabletop are the shape, type of edge, surface treatment, and clarity of the glass. See our website for additional information on all the features available.
